ARCTIC PRESENTATIONS
Linda does powerpoint presentations on the Arctic for art groups and galleries. She has been artist-in-residence and speaker at McMichael Gallery, and Varley Gallery, among others. Linda shares her experiences of travelling in the High Arctic, Inuit art and culture, as well as historical experiences of artists and explorers venturing through the Northwest Passage and in Canada's Arctic. Linda has a collection of Arctic artifacts that she shares with the audience.
ARCTIC WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS
Linda teaches many art workshops to students incorporating Inuit art and culture and the Arctic landscape.
As part of the Lieutenant Governor's twinning initiative between schools in Nunavut and Ontario, she has been asked to be Artist-in-Residence for the Toronto Catholic District School Board and teach workshops in all of their participating schools. To recognize these efforts, the TCDSB presented the Hon. James Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, with the painting "Follow Your Dreams" by artist Linda Mackey at the recent Arctic Games in Toronto.
All workshops begin with a powerpoint presentation and an opportuntity to see Inuit artifacts. Select from the following workshops:
• charcoal drawings of Inuksuk
• students become early explorers and create maps and stories based on their experiences in the Canadian High Arctic and interaction with the Inuit along their route
• stencil painting based on the techniques used by the world-renowned Pangnirtung Print Shop in Pangnirtung, Baffin Island
• wall hangings based on Inuit tapestries at Pangnirtung Print Shop
• landscape paintings of the Arctic using acrylic paint on canvas. A simplified palette is used to encourage colour mixing and students are taught how to mix Arctic greys without black
COMMENTS FROM TEACHERS
"Hi Linda! Thanks ever so much from my class and myself for two wonderful workshops with you. I am sitting and admiring their work right now - work that would not exist without you. Now you know why all of the kids cheered you on when you were at the Arctic Games. You give them such a positive feeling about themselves and allow them to realize the artist within."
