When canvas meets cold
by Kurtis Elsner When Tottenham
artist Linda Mackey was saving money to go on a painting
expedition to Canada’s Arctic, she told her friends
and family it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
She lied.
She made the trip in 2002, and after spending her
first night on an Arctic beach she realized that this
could not be her only trip to the region. In fact,
it became the first step down a path that would change
her life. “I knew I had lied. I really had to
share this great secret of the Arctic with others,”
said Mackey.
Since 2002, Mackey has been to the Arctic three more
times. She spearheaded artist trips to the Arctic
in 2004 and 2006, and made a trip as a resident artist
on Students on Ice this summer... click

Artists paint Arctic vistas
by Peter Gorrie DAVIS STRAIT,
off Baffin Island—It's a typical 7 a.m. on the
cruise ship Akademik Ioffe, carrying 25 artists, mainly
from Toronto, through Canada's High Arctic.
Most of the group, and the 80 other
passengers, have just stumbled into the third-deck lounge
for coffee. First desperate gulps are barely down the
hatch when the outer door opens and John Joy bursts
in on a cool breeze with his first completed painting
of the day.
It's a large watercolour that, because
Joy paints only in the open air and never from photos,
depicts whatever he's just seen across the ship's rail.
On this trip, that's usually bare, jagged mountains
or fantastically sculpted icebergs, set off by washes
of sea and sky that perfectly capture the light and
atmosphere... click

Arctic
Quest artists explore beauty of northern Canada
by Krissie Rutherford
A century after Roald Amundsen became the first to navigate
the Northwest Passage, a group of artists have retraced
the Norwegian explorer's steps to capture and celebrate
Canada's North.
Arctic Quest - the group of 25 professional
artists who went on the journey - returned Aug. 4 from
a 12-day adventure in Canada's High Arctic. Their first
in a series of exhibitions showing what they've captured
opens tomorrow at Oakville's Win Henstock Gallery.
"It was just incredible to go
and experience history and feel what the early explorers
felt more than 150 years ago," said Linda Mackey,
who, with Kathy Haycock, conceived the idea for Arctic
Quest. "The trip was absolutely amazing."...

Take the Northwest
Passage by Alissa Von Bargen
Arctic Quest 2006 is an interesting concept: 25 artists
off to paint in the Arctic, celebrating the 100 year
anniversary of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's
opening of the Northwest Passage. The artists will
be joined by a Gemini-award winning documentary crew
as they retrace the 1906 voyage.
But the story behind the concept is more than interesting-
it's fascinating. Tales of serendipitous meetings,
tragedies, and instant karma surround Arctic Quest....
